How to Defend a Research Title

Whether you’re defending a published paper or an idea for a future research project, you’ll want to know how to defend a research title. This depends on the nature of the paper and the area of research, but in general, you’ll want to defend the title of your paper against other research that has been published in the same field. The title of a study is extremely important because it can dramatically affect the attention it gets and the conclusions people draw from it. In this blog, I’ll go through the different kinds of titles researchers can choose from and explain how they can be used to influence the attention a paper gets.

Title 1, explains the topic and method of the study, but it is not particularly catchy.

In title 2, the topic is mentioned partially, but no details are provided about the study’s methodology—it could simply be a theoretical or opinion piece.

The title 3 is slightly catchier but gives little information about the article at all.

In title 4, there is a catchy main title, as well as a subtitle that provides information about the content and methodology of the study.

Researchers Hairston and Keene state that, to create a good title for a paper, it must achieve four objectives as outlined below:

  • A research paper’s content should be predicted by this statement.
  • It should be interesting to the reader.
  • The tone should be reflected in the introduction.
  • In order to make it easier to find, it should contain keywords that make it easier to find during a keyword search.

 How to make a strong research title
